Lunar Eclipse & Full Moon In Leo (January 2018)

January has been a big month this year in terms of moon phases - two full moons to start and end the first month of 2018. If this isn’t a sign that 2018 is going to be a powerful year, I don’t know what is! We started with the full moon in Cancer on the 2nd January and we’re ending the month with not just a full moon in Leo on the 31st January, but it's also a supermoon, a blue moon and lunar eclipse - blood moon. Yes, that is absolutely as intense as it sounds!

A supermoon occurs when the full moon is at a closer point of orbit to the Earth. This makes the moon appear super big, super bright and super close to us - hence why they call it the super moon. A full moon is intense anyway, but a supermoon takes that tension and multiplies it - so be prepared for strong emotions and dramatic reactions.

Ever heard the saying 'once in a blue moon'? The blue moon is a rare phenomena - it only happens every 2 and a half years - and is the term used for the second full moon in a single calendar month. Although it's called a blue moon, the moon won't actually appear blue in colour.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth's shadow blocks the sun's light for a small amount of time, stopping it from being reflected onto the moon. This can often cause the moon to turn blood-red in colour - giving it the name Blood Moon. A lunar eclipse will also intensify the moon's energies, so as you can imagine, January 31st will be a crazy time for us all.

What Does A Full Moon In Leo Mean?

Next week's Full Moon (Wednesday, January 31st 2018) falls under the fire sign of Leo and is sure to be an intensely dramatic one! Leo is an extremely creative and theatrical sign and is all about being the centre of attention. Leo is often considered to be a determined and bold sign and with the motto 'I will...', you can be sure that they will do everything in their power to get what they want. It's the fifth house in astrology, operating under creativity, therefore, this is the perfect time to let your creative juices flow. Just have fun with it and be sure to express yourself with wild abandon.

This Full Moon is all about letting your artistic nature shine through. Don't hold back - be passionate and creative with your self-expression, whether that be art, music, writing or whatever other talents that you might have. Now is the time to take action with whatever you may have hidden up your sleeve. Now is your time to leap out of the shadows and into the light. This Full Moon will provide you with all of the energy that you need in order to get yourself out there.

The fact that all of these moon events - supermoon, blue moon, total eclipse - fall under the Leo sign this month is no mistake. These are intense and dramatic events perfect for an intense and dramatic sign. Our emotions will be heightened under this full moon and our need for attention and validation will be at an all time high. The moon is asking us to be loud and proud with our endeavours and let our talents and personalities shine.

Cleansing Objects During The Full Moon

Certain objects cling on to energy like a drowning man clings to a life raft. This is especially bad when the object is exposed to a lot of negative energy. It's important to cleanse objects of these energies and recharge them. A Full Moon is the perfect opportunity to cleanse and charge your objects of any leftover energy, especially ritualistic objects such as crystals and tarot cards. A Full Moon cleansing is very simple and doesn't require a lot of time and effort. Simply place your objects on a windowsill that is in full view of the Full Moon and leave them there overnight.

Tip: crystals can also be placed outside overnight during a full moon but I wouldn't recommend doing this with tarot cards as they could be affected by weather conditions.

Ritual For Cleansing Bad Emotions And Past Memories

A Full Moon is also the perfect time to cleanse your mind and release all of your pent up emotions and memories from your life in order to move forward. The energy of the Full Moon will allow you to let go of the unnecessary baggage in your life that is holding your back, which will give you the clarity to take that first step into your future. Here is a simple Full Moon Cleansing Ritual to help you let go of the past.

  1. First, you must think about the things that are holding you back and decide what you want or need to let go of.
  2. Find a space that basks in the moonlight and sit in a comfortable position. Outside is often best but if this isn't an option, find an indoor space with a big window that faces the Full Moon.
  3. Now it's time to relax your mind through meditation. Sit comfortably, close your eyes and focus completely on your breathing. By concentrating on your breathing technique, you're not giving yourself much time to think about anything else, therefore, clearing your mind.
  4. Now that you've cleared your mind of all thoughts, you must now concentrate on the Full Moon and tune into the energy that it is projecting onto you.
  5. Bring the thing you want to let go of into your mind. Think about why you want to release it and concentrate on that reason. Now take a deep breath, and whilst doing this, imagine that obstacle leaving your body.
  6. Exhale and imagine yourself expelling the obstacle out with your breath and drifting away from you.
