The Hanged Man
The Hanged Man - Upright
Sacrifice, lack of progress, stamina, changing directions, understanding, letting go, suspension
The Hanged Man is a card of suspension and represents that you’re currently feeling indecisive and confused about a situation or aspect of your life. This card warns that now is not the best time to be making decisions so if there is any important actions or decisions to be made, try and hold it off as much as possible. Instead, take your time and reflect on it, don’t rush anything at this time. By waiting and being patient, you may find that you have more options than initially thought.
Are you feeling stuck right now? The Hanged Man can often represent restrictions in life. Restrictions often happen when you can’t let go of the past because it prevents you from moving forward. In order to get unstuck you must learn to let go. The problem with the past is that it’s easier said than done to let go of your past experiences, but you must realise that what has happened has happened and there’s nothing you can do to change that now. You must surrender yourself to the present.
The Hanged Man is often considered as the ultimate martyr. He is willingly sacrificing himself in order to reach a higher purpose and achieve his greatest goals. This card is a reminder that everything comes with a sacrifice. The Hanged Man tells you that in order to reach your goals, you must willingly make sacrifices along the way. You must prioritise your goals and forget about your own personal interests in order to reach success. Don’t worry, however, as these sacrifices are only temporary until success is achieved.
The Hanged Man - Reversed
Futile sacrifice, selfishness, pain, letting go, materialism, unaware, lack of perspective, indecision
The Hanged Man in reversed form suggests that you may feel as if you are sacrificing many things in your life for absolutely nothing. You feel as if there has been no reward for your efforts and are now beginning to feel stuck. You can’t go forwards, you can’t go backwards; there is no way to go. You’re starting to believe that there is no way out of the situation that you find yourself in. The Hanged Man asks you to stay patient and assures you that this will soon pass, things will start moving along and you will soon see the rewards of your sacrifices.
This reversed card can also suggest that you’re possibly holding off on making an important decision and instead are hoping that the situation will sort itself out and simply go away without any effort on your part. The reversed Hanged Man reminds you that things don’t work that way, it is just wishful thinking. By doing this, you are simply obstructing the inevitable for a short space of time but eventually this decision will come to a head and you will be forced to take action, whether you like it or not.
