The Fool Tarot Card Meaning

The Fool Tarot Card Meaning

The Fool is the first card of the Major Arcana and represents the very beginning of our journey. He embodies each of us at the start of a new adventure, whatever that may be. He is a fool, not because he acts unwisely or lacks common sense, but because he is innocent and naive. He does not know what lies ahead on his journey but he goes along with it anyway. He has yet to learn the challenges that he will face and the dark roads ahead but he carries on without concern. Some may call him a fool, but others may call him brave.

The Fool is the first card of the tarot deck and it's numerological value is 0 - it is the only card of this number. Zero is a powerful number, simply because it represents nothing with the potential for everything. It represents a fresh start - a blank page - ready for the next adventure. The slate has been wiped clean and is ready to begin afresh.

Upright Meanings

The Fool is a card of new beginnings and suggests that you are at the very start of a new journey in your life. You may be going into this experience blind and unsure of where it could lead you, but you're also aware of the opportunities that it could present you with. The path ahead is filled with uncertainty, but don't let that stop you from taking chances, just be sure to look before you leap.

This card can also suggest that you may be unconventional and don’t pay much attention to what others have to say. You have your own ideas and beliefs and you like to do what makes you comfortable. You’re not one to follow the crowd, instead, you’re independent and care free and only worry about your own problems.

Each day is an adventure and each moment is lived to its highest potential. The Fool indicates the beginning of all things creative and suggests that you have a desire to accomplish new goals. Anything can happen for you right now and there are many chances that are waiting to be taken advantage of.

The Fool suggests that you have a desire for adventure and that you feel the need to set out on a new journey, one that is unknown. This card is all about personal growth and development. He asks that you take a leap of faith and trust in the Universe. He wants you be like him, living a carefree life that is free from worry and anxiety.

Reversed Keywords

  • Naivety, foolishness, recklessness, risk taking, chaos, inexperience, bad judgement

Reversed Meanings

The Fool in a reversed position advised that you not take any risks at this time. Right now is not the time to make any rash decisions, as well as any impulsive actions and choices. This card is an omen of foolishness, naivety and wasting your creative energy. Don't rush into anything. Take your time, think it through carefully and only proceed when you're ready and it's the right thing to do.

It could also suggest that you like to start things but you rarely ever finish them. If this is the case, the reversed Fool warns that if you don't stop this behaviour, you will never reach your full potential and achieve your goals. Always follow through with your plans.

Are you acting in complete disregard of the consequences of your actions? Are you acting the fool? The reversed Fool can also suggest that you’re trying too hard to live in the moment rather than planning ahead. This is a pretty reckless way to go through life, and although this way may have worked for you so far, it won't always. Start thinking about your future and where you want to be, and make some goals towards this ideal future.
