It's almost Valentine's Day, and - whether you love it or hate it - you can't ignore it. There are roses, chocolates, champagne and teddy bears everywhere you look, and although it's not the worst thing in the world, it can make some people feel really down. There's a massive stigma around being lonely on Valentine's Day, and honestly, it's not the end of the world if you haven't got a date on February 14th! Valentine's Day is as much about showing yourself love as it is showing someone else love.

I think we all forget sometimes that the most important relationship in our lives is the relationship we have with ourselves. YOU are your most important person. We've all heard the saying 'you can't love someone until you learn to love yourself' - this is SO true! How can we give our love to someone else if we can't even give our love to our own body and mind? It's impossible!

We should all dedicate a little time for some much needed self-care, and Valentine's Day is the perfect day for that. Forget about dates, cards and presents and concentrate on YOU! Be your own number one this February 14th - whether you're single, in a relationship, married or it's complicated. Here are 10 perfect ways to practice self-care on Valentine's Day!

 

1. Buy Yourself A Gift

Who says that you need a partner to receive gifts on Valentine's Day?! Buy yourself some flowers and chocolates. Treat yourself to that piece of jewellery that you've been lusting over for weeks. Go out and spoil yourself because guess what - you deserve it!

 

2. Clear Your Space

I'm not asking you to go crazy and do a full spring clean - that's more like self-torture. Just simply clean up your favourite space to make it more comforting and inviting to you. Make sure that the space is open and brings positive and happy energy with it. You'll feel so much better in a clean environment.

 

3. Light Candles / Incense

Is there anything more relaxing than lighting a candle or burning incense? I don't think there is. I find that these practices have a way of soothing and centring you, whether it's the flame, the smoke or the smell - whatever it is, I'm all for it! Candles and incense for me should be at the top of every self-care routine.

 

4. Do Some Yoga

Yoga is one of my favourite things to do. I hate exercising but for me yoga is not exercise, it's more of a hobby! Yoga is my go-to when I feel like I need a little self-love. There's nothing like being grounded in that present moment - it's such an euphoric rush. It's bound to make even the heavy-hearted feel a little better.

 

5. Meditation

Much like the last two points, meditation is a must for any self-care list. Sometimes the only medicine that we need in life is to clear our minds and be one with our breathing. Giving your mind a rest and focusing on your breathing techniques holds so many benefits and is the perfect practice for cleansing and clarification.

 

 

6. Book Yourself A Massage

Nothing will make you feel better about your body than getting a massage, I promise. Book yourself in for a professional massage and allow all of the tension and bad energy in your body to be released. I can guarantee that you will come out of that massage feeling renewed.

 

7. A Nice Long Soak In The Bath

When I need a little self-love, I draw myself a hot ritual bath to detox and purify not only myself, but my energy too. This usually includes hot water, pink Himalayan bath salts, Jasmine scented oils and a rose quartz crystal added into the water. Then I place my favourite candles around the tub, play some soothing music and relax!

 

8. Pamper Yourself

Pamper sessions fix everything - I swear - and are perfect self-care practices. When you feel good about the way that you look, you instantly feel good about yourself. It raises your self-esteem and confidence, which then makes you give off amazing energy. So slap on a face and hair mask, give yourself a manicure or even treat yourself to professional treatments. Why not?!

 

9. Read A Book

Forget about electronics - turn off your TV, your phone and your laptop - and relax with your favourite, feel-good book. There's something so much more relaxing about reading a book and it always makes me feel so much better than if I was watching TV or playing on my phone. You drift off into a world of your own and forget about the worries of real life, even if just for a few hours.

 

10. Celebrate Your Existence

This is something that I feel everybody should do! We're all here for a reason - we deserve to be alive - and if we can't celebrate that, what can we celebrate?! So grab yourself a bottle of wine - or champagne - and raise a glass to your beautiful life!
