There are many different kinds of energies coursing through our bodies and these different energies have different energy sources. These energy sources are the chakras. There are seven main chakras in our body altogether and these can all be found in the spine. They align vertically from the base of the spine - the root - to the top of the head - the crown.

In learning and understanding the chakras, you can learn and understand your own body and become in tune with it's energies. By connecting with your body through the chakras, you can then learn to balance and re-align them in order to become healthier and happier in life.

In this post, we will be looking at the second chakra - the sacral chakra - and how we can activate ours in order to live a more creative and pleasurable life. If you haven’t activated your root chakra yet, I suggest you start here before moving on to the sacral.

An Introduction To The Sacral Chakra

Sacral Chakra

The sacral chakra is located by the pubic bone - just below the belly button - and is the second major chakra. The Sanskrit name for this chakra is 'Svadhishana' which translates to 'the place of the self'. The sacral chakra is connected to the element of water and is represented by the colour orange.

This chakra is all about your creative energy and who you are as a person - your identity - and represents the way you flow through life. This chakra also represents your ability to indulge in life's pleasures e.g sex.

The sacral chakra is connected to your reproductive system and lower abdomen and governs your ability to create new life.

 

What Does A Balanced Sacral Chakra Feel Like?

When your sacral chakra is balanced, you will be able to indulge in pleasurable actions without feeling guilty or embarrassed about it. You will also feel fulfilled and inspired by these actions. 

The sacral chakra is all about the flow of life throughout our body. It controls our creative energy, our connection to other people and our sexual health. With  a balanced sacral chakra, you will be able to feel pleasure and creativity in all aspects of your life including sexual fulfilment, physical activities and communicating with others.

The root chakra represents our sense of identity - who we are as a person - so when balanced we will also experience a sense of emotional awareness. Always remember that it’s essential for your root chakra to be in working order for your other chakras to work efficiently, .

 

Signs That There’s An Imbalance In Your Sacral Chakra 

When there’s an imbalance in the sacral chakra, you may become too dependant on other people, both mentally and physically - almost like an addiction to that person. You may also feel as if you're emotions are taking over where and when they please - you've become over-sensitive and you have no control over it. want to feel secure and safe but that feels impossible right now. A blocked sacral chakra stops the flow of life in your veins, so of course you're going to feel frustrated and emotional!

Another sign of a blocked sacral chakra are issues of a sexual nature. If you're experiencing issues in the bedroom, such as, lack of desire, pleasure or excitement, fear of sex or sexually acting out, you may have a blocked sacral chakra on your hands.

Food & Drink

What better way to look after your body - and chakras - than to fill it with good nutritional foods and drinks. We are what we eat after all! As the sacral chakra is represented by the colour orange , our nutrition is going to be focused mainly on orange foods, such as:

  • Carrots
  • Sweet potato

Crystals and stones are perfect for healing as they carry so much vibrational energy with them. Healing your chakras through crystals is more effective when in close proximity to that specific chakra. Wear your crystals as jewellery or place directly over the affected chakra for better results. Yoga

When it comes to healing your sacral chakra, you can’t go wrong with yoga. Yoga poses are an effective way to gain self-confidence and also enhance your desire - these are vital for sacral chakra healing. The best yoga poses for sacral chakra healing include:

  • Cobra pose
  • Low Lunge pose
  • Pigeon pose
  • Goddess pose
 

Reflexology

Different chakras have different pressure points and it’s important to know where those pressure points are. Reflexology is another term for zone therapy and involves applying pressure to and/or massaging certain pressure points. Here are the sacral  chakra pressure points in the body:

  • Just below the base of the wrist
  • The soles of our feet - the inner edge of the sole 
 

Meditation

Meditation is another powerful practice to balance your sacral chakra - I mean, meditation IS medicine for the soul after all. If you’re a beginner to meditation, you might like to start with my post A Guide To Meditation. Here is a simple meditation designed specifically for sacral chakra healing:

  1. Find a quiet space where you will be free of distractions or interruptions - an outside space would be perfect, if possible.
  2. Sit comfortably in the lotus position - cross legged - with your hands resting comfortably in your lap with the back of your right hand resting lightly on your left palm.
  3. Close your eyes and take three deep breaths, extending them for as long as possible - really focus on those breaths.
  4. Visualise a bright orange light rotating near your belly button - where the sacral chakra is located. Focus on this light.
  5. Chant the mantra ‘VAM’ while still focusing on that light.  This mantra matches the vibration of the sacral chakra.
  6. Now visualise that rotating orange light rippling out - like water - and enveloping your whole body.
  7. Finish your meditation with a strong affirmation.
 

Experience Nature

The sacral chakra is ruled by the element of water so what better way to heal it than to spend time by a water source. Visit your nearest river, lake or even pond! Or take a trip to the beach and spend some time watching the waves. Take in the view, listen to the peaceful movement and just simply be right there, in that present moment. If you can - weather permitting of course - jump in, bathe or even have a little swim. Think of the water as your medicine.

My favourite resource for sacral chakra healing is Raise Your Vibration by Kyle Gray. This book has been - and still is - my go-to when it comes to sorting out my chakras. I stumbled upon this book by accident but I’m so glad I did because it works!
