There are many different kinds of energies coursing through our bodies and these different energies have different energy sources. These energy sources are the chakras. There are seven main chakras in our body altogether and these can all be found in the spine. They align vertically from the base of the spine - the root - to the top of the head - the crown.

In learning and understanding the chakras, you can learn and understand your own body and become in tune with it's energies. By connecting with your body through the chakras, you can then learn to balance and re-align them in order to become healthier and happier in life.

In this post, we will be looking at the fifth chakra - the throat chakra - and how we can activate ours in order to live a more expressive and honest life. If you haven’t activated your root chakra yet, I suggest you start here before jumping to the Throat.

An Introduction To The Throat Chakra

Throat Chakra

The throat chakra is the fifth chakra and is located - yup, you guessed it! - above the collarbone in the throat and neck area. The Sanskrit name for this chakra is 'Vishuddha' which translates to 'very pure'. The throat chakra is connected to the element of space and is represented by the colour blue.

This chakra is all about communication - our ability to communicate with others, voice our opinions and speak our truths. The throat chakra is the way we express ourselves on an emotional level.

The throat chakra is connected to the throat and neck area - especially our vocal chords. It also looks after the thyroid gland which is essential for stability in our hormones.

 

What Does A Balanced Throat Chakra Feel Like?

When your throat chakra is balanced, you will be able to voice your thoughts and opinions with clarity and confidence. You'll have the ability to speak the truth with love and compassion for others

The throat chakra is all about self-expression - your ability to speak out - and when this chakra is balanced, you will not only be able to communicate clearly and freely, but you will also be able to listen attentively to others.  You will also be able to speak more honestly about your thoughts and feelings without worrying about others opinions.

The throat chakra represents our ability to flow freely, which increases our creative ability also. Always remember that it’s essential for your root chakra to be in working order for your other chakras to work efficiently.

 

Signs That There’s An Imbalance In Your Throat Chakra

When there’s an imbalance in the throat chakra, you may experience an inability to communicate freely and honestly. you constantly watch what you say and sometimes find it difficult to speak up for what you believe in. You may be unable to put your thoughts and feelings into words making you come across as shy or weak-willed. 

Another sign of a blocked throat chakra is talking too much without often thinking about what your saying or it’s consequences.  You may find it difficult to listen to other people, instead, interrupting and going off on your own tangent. A blocked throat chakra can often make you come across as both selfish and insensitive. If any of this sounds familiar, you may have a blocked throat chakra on your hands!

What better way to look after your body - and chakras - than to fill it with good nutritional foods and drinks. We are what we eat after all! As the throat chakra is represented by the colour blue, our nutrition is going to be focused mainly on blue foods, such as:

Crystals and stones are perfect for healing as they carry so much vibrational energy with them. Yoga

When it comes to healing your chakras, you can’t go wrong with yoga. Yoga poses are an effective way to gain confidence in, not just yourself, but also your surroundings, which is vital for throat chakra healing. The best yoga poses for throat chakra healing include:

  • Fish pose
  • Bridge pose
  • Plow pose
  • Knees Chest Chin pose
 

Reflexology

Different chakras have different pressure points and it’s important to know where those pressure points are. Reflexology is another term for zone therapy and involves applying pressure to and/or massaging certain pressure points. Here are the throat  chakra pressure points in the body:

  • Along the base of the fingers where they join into the palm
  • Just below the base of the toe
 

Meditation

Meditation is another powerful practice to balance your throat chakra - I mean, meditation IS medicine for the soul after all. If you’re a beginner to meditation, you might like to start with my post A Guide To Meditation. Here is a simple meditation designed specifically for throat chakra healing:

  1. Find a quiet space where you will be free of distractions or interruptions - an outside space would be perfect, if possible.
  2. Sit comfortably in the lotus position. Intertwine your fingers inside your hands, pull up and allow your thumbs to touch.
  3. Close your eyes and take three deep breaths, extending them for as long as possible - really focus on those breaths.
  4. Visualise a ball of blue light rotating in your chest - where the throat chakra is located. Focus on this light and imagine that your unspoken words are held in that light.
  5. Chant the mantra ‘HAM’ while still focusing on that light.  This mantra matches the vibration of the throat chakra.
  6. Now visualise that rotating blue light move up your throat and out of your mouth, enveloping your body from the outside. Imagine your words escaping with the light.
  7. Finish your meditation with a strong affirmation.
 

Warm Up Your Vocal Chords

There’s no better way to exercise your throat chakra than to use your voice, whichever way you feel like it. Scream, shout, talk out loud, chant your favourite mantra or sing at the top of your voice. Feel the freedom of letting your voice flow without care or worry. 


Raise Your Vibration

My favourite resource for throat chakra healing is Raise Your Vibration by Kyle Gray. This book has been - and still is - my go-to when it comes to sorting out my chakras. I stumbled upon this book by accident but I’m so glad I did because it works!

The book is about raising your vibration - if you haven’t already guessed - and includes 111 practices to increase your spiritual connection through the 7 energy centres in your body.
