A Guide To Your Heart Chakra

There are many different kinds of energies coursing through our bodies and these different energies have different energy sources. These energy sources are the chakras. There are seven main chakras in our body altogether and these can all be found in the spine. They align vertically from the base of the spine - the root - to the top of the head - the crown.

In learning and understanding the chakras, you can learn and understand your own body and become in tune with it's energies. By connecting with your body through the chakras, you can then learn to balance and re-align them in order to become healthier and happier in life.

In this post, we will be looking at the fourth chakra - the heart chakra - and how we can activate ours in order to live a more loving and compassionate life. If you haven’t activated your root chakra yet, I suggest you start here before jumping to the heart.

An Introduction To The Heart Chakra

Hearty Chakra

The heart chakra is the fourth chakra and is located - yup, you guessed it! - in the centre of the chest, close to the heart. The Sanskrit name for this chakra is 'Anahata' which translates to 'unhurt'. The heart chakra is connected to the element of air and is represented by the colour green.

The heart chakra is all about your ability to give and receive in a loving manner. This chakra is where feelings of love, compassion, generosity and kindness comes from. This chakra is also associated with healing

This chakra is connected to your heart and chest area - representing your lungs and upper respiratory systems.

 

What Does A Balanced Heart Chakra Feel Like?

When the heart chakra is balanced, you will feel compassion and kindness for others on another level as well as the ability to love yourself and others equally.

The heart chakra is all about self-love - your ability to love yourself - and when this chakra is balanced, you will not only be able to feel unconditional love for yourself and your achievements, but you will also be able to feel unconditional love for others. You will feel empathy and will be able to forgive easily which will leave you open and accepting to both love and life.

The heart chakra represents our ability to connect with others on another level and governs our relationships with others. When this chakra is balanced you will be more likely to experience successful friendships and relationships. Always remember that it’s essential for your root chakra to be in working order for your other chakras to work efficiently.

 

Signs That There’s An Imbalance In Your Heart Chakra

When there’s an imbalance in the heart chakra, you may experience feelings of self-loathing and the inability to forgive yourself for past mistakes. This self-loathing could lead to depression and antisocial behaviour. Also, because of this twisted view you have of yourself, you will be unable to love others truly - the saying ‘you can’t love another if you don’t love yourself first’  springs to mind.

Another sign of a blocked heart chakra is being over-dependant on loved ones making you come across as over-bearing at times.  You may experience feelings of jealousy around that person, almost as if your being over-possessive of them. A blocked heart chakra can also cause you to develop a victim mentality. If any of this sounds familiar, you may have a blocked heart chakra on your hands!

Food & Drink

What better way to look after your body - and chakras - than to fill it with good nutritional foods and drinks. We are what we eat after all! As the heart chakra is represented by the colour green, our nutrition is going to be focused mainly on green foods, such as:

  • Apples
  • Kiwis 
  • Celery
  • Green Peppers
  • Cucumbers
 

Crystals

Crystals and stones are perfect for healing as they carry so much vibrational energy with them. Healing your chakras through crystals is more effective when in close proximity to that specific chakra. Wear your crystals as jewellery or place directly over the affected chakra for better results. Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is an amazing healing agent and the fact that the chakras are thought to be connected to our sense of smell makes it so much better! Here are some of the best smells for heart chakra healing:

 

 

Yoga

When it comes to healing your chakras, you can’t go wrong with yoga. Yoga poses are an effective way to gain confidence in, not just yourself, but also your surroundings, which is vital for heart chakra healing. The best yoga poses for heart chakra healing include:

  • Camel pose
  • Cobra pose
  • Forward Bend pose
  • Cat pose
  • Bridge pose
 

Reflexology

Different chakras have different pressure points and it’s important to know where those pressure points are. Reflexology is another term for zone therapy and involves applying pressure to and/or massaging certain pressure points. Here are the heart chakra pressure points in the body:

  • From the thumb joint all away across the palm
  • Left foot - base beneath the second and fourth toe
 

Meditation

Meditation is another powerful practice to balance your heart chakra - I mean, meditation IS medicine for the soul after all. If you’re a beginner to meditation, you might like to start with my post A Guide To Meditation. Here is a simple meditation designed specifically for heart chakra healing:

  1. Find a quiet space where you will be free of distractions or interruptions - an outside space would be perfect, if possible.
  2. Sit comfortably in the lotus position. Join the tips of your index fingers and thumbs and hold them in front of your chest - just under the breast bone area.
  3. Close your eyes and take three deep breaths, extending them for as long as possible - really focus on those breaths.
  4. Visualise a ball of green light rotating in the middle of your chest - where the heart chakra is located. Focus on this light.
  5. Chant the mantra ‘YAM’ while still focusing on that light.  This mantra matches the vibration of the heart chakra.
  6. Now visualise that rotating green light open up like a rosebud, blossoming until it covers your whole  body and smile.
  7. Finish your meditation with a strong affirmation.
 

Surround Yourself With Those You Love

There's no better way to fill your heart with warmth than to spend time with your loved ones, whether it be family, friends, your partner or maybe even your pets - spending time with my dogs can heal my heart instantly. When you’re down or need a little healing, round up those closest to you and enjoy yourself.

 

Shadow Work

Shadow-work is an essential self-care practice and is vital for spiritual healing and personal growth. Shadow work is when you venture deep inside yourself and learn to understand your shadow - your dark side. This includes your fears, your flaws, your negative tendencies and all the other things we choose to ignore within ourselves. Our shadow self is our unconscious mind and to grow both personally and spiritually, we must be aware of it. Coming to terms with your shadow self is the ultimate self-care achievement!

My favourite resource for heart chakra healing is Raise Your Vibration by Kyle Gray. This book has been - and still is - my go-to when it comes to sorting out my chakras. I stumbled upon this book by accident but I’m so glad I did because it works!

The book is about raising your vibration - if you haven’t already guessed - and includes 111 practices to increase your spiritual connection through the 7 energy centres in your body.
