The 5 Biggest Life Lessons I’ve Learned Through Tarot

Tarot Life Lessons

About eight years ago, I took the big (and life changing) plunge of purchasing my first ever tarot deck, evidently putting me on this journey of self-discovery and purposeful living that I find myself on right now.

At this time, my knowledge of these transcending cards was pretty basic, and by basic I mean non-existent. I say this because, although I’d read a few books and done some research online before making that purchase, I came to understand that you never really know the true meaning of tarot until you have your own deck in your hands.

When you’re new to tarot, you (very early on) find out that knowledge comes with experience and plenty of practice.

I had absolutely no way of knowing at that very moment how much my life was going to change just from gaining a simple set of cards with some rather beautiful pictures on them.

I didn’t know what I’d let myself in for, but I wouldn’t change that for the world.

Over the years (and a few decks later), I have learnt so much from my trusted cards - both about tarot and about myself and the circumstances I often find myself in. I can honestly say that I am not the person I was before I picked up that first deck, and I’m rather glad for that.

When I picked up that first deck, I was in a pretty bad place in my life. I was holding onto a lot of trauma, negativity, and anger, and I was starting to lose myself and my purpose. Through putting my effort and energy into working with my inner self (mostly through the cards themselves), I created time and space within to allow myself to heal and to transform. To rise from my ashes and shine from the inside out. All through some simple lessons taught from the cards themselves.

1. Your Intuition Is Your Most Powerful Tool

Your intuition is that inner knowing that stems beyond your conscious awareness. It’s almost like an automatic understanding that often motivates us to react, even when we have no conscious reason or perception to do so. It’s, put simply, a feeling within that cannot be explained but has our back one hundred percent of the way.

Some call it an inner voice, some call it a gut instinct, but whatever you like to call it, it can hold a lot of power in your life, if you let it. Tapping into our intuition and being able to make conscious decisions and take intuitive actions is a high-vibrational move in life. Our intuition is always working towards our highest good and in following the path it’s laying out for us, we allow ourselves to live a better quality and happier life.

And, tarot is a brilliant tool to connect and tune into that intuitive power.

When we read tarot, it activates our intuition through prompting emotions within. When we pull a card and hone in on its energy, it sparks something inside us. Something bigger than what we are consciously aware of. That something is your intuition. Have you ever pulled a card and, without knowing much about it’s textbook meaning, have been able to interpret it perfectly around your question? That is your intuition awakening.

When you master the art of reading tarot intuitively, you can open yourself up to so much hidden knowledge that will change your perception of life as you know it. You allow yourself to see through limiting beliefs caused by modern day illusions and break the barrier between fear and love.

The trick to doing this is to simply allow your intuition to guide you to what the cards are trying to tell you through simply tuning into the cards energy and imagery, clearing your mind to give your intuition a platform to speak and, most importantly, staying patient. Don’t force it, just let it happen when it’s ready.

2. Learning Is A Never Ending  Journey

The thing I love the most about the cards, and I’m sure other readers would agree, is that you never stop learning from them. Just when you think you know all there is to know, new insight and knowledge will come out of nowhere and (quite literally sometimes) slap you across the face.

To put it simply, tarot never gets old because there is always something new to learn, whether that’s in areas of your life, intuitive insights, or even your practice itself, you are never done learning with it. And that’s pretty similar to everyday life. We never stop learning new things, even when we don’t even realise it. We are constantly learning new things, whether that be intentionally or non-intentionally.

One of my biggest lessons in tarot is that you can know a lot about a particular subject or situation, but more often than not, you’ve barely skimmed the surface.

Because, real life has absolutely nothing to do with being smart or being able to drink in as much information as possible. It’s about our creative natures and what we do with it.

Our imagination. Our perception. Our intuition. Our emotions. These things are constantly evolving, and as long as those creative aspects within us are adapting and changing, so will our inner self and the way we perceive our lives and everything involved in it.

There are always new techniques of practice, new interpretations of the card meanings, and new decks that are constantly and completely changing the game within the tarot community, just like there are always new ways of living, new perceptions and takes on our present situations, and new products and advanced technologies that are completely changing the world within our lives.

Life slows down for nobody, and nothing ever stays the same. And so, we are on a constant journey of learning that cannot be avoided, and I’m okay with that.

3. Confidence Is Key

Everyone has their own battles with self-confidence, and this can stem in both confidence in ourselves in general and confidence in our abilities to do even the simplest of things.

Personally, I’ve always suffered substantially with my confidence as well as my self-esteem and it’s been a rut I’ve found incredibly difficult to get myself out of. However, I found that the more comfortable and confident I became with my tarot practice, the more comfortable and confident I became within myself.

I’ve learned that confidence is not something that can be forced. It takes time, energy and practice, just like tarot.

Reading tarot is all about your intuition and going with your gut rather than logic, and in doing this you must have confidence to do so. To believe in yourself and your ability and, also, to believe in your intuition and the ways in which it guides you. This kind of self-belief is not just the key to becoming a good tarot reader. It’s the key to living a happy and successful life.

The only way to move forward on your journey is to take that big leap of faith that motivates you to step out of your comfort zone and step into your own spotlight.

Without tarot, I don’t think I would have ever been able to start up my own business and put myself out there the way I’ve been able to up until now, even though it’s always been my dream. I have always been too scared. And I’m still scared, but now I don’t shy away from that fear. That fear is my driving force, because for once, I have the confidence and self-belief to know that I am capable of anything I put my mind to.

Through my regular tarot practice I have come to have faith in myself, my abilities and, most importantly, my intuition. And you can too!

4. You Won’t Always Like What You Hear

Tarot is that one friend you go to for advice and then regret it (for a second or two), because you know they’re going to tell it as it is, even though they know you’re not going to like it. The cards love to hand out a wake up call or two from time to time, even when it’s the last thing you want to hear!

The reason behind this is that it may not be what you want to hear, but it’s clearly something that you need to hear. Tarot is not a tool that’s going to feed into your ego and agree with everything you say or do, it’s vibrating higher than that. Tarot is a tool of enlightenment. It’s going to give you hard truths and highlight toxic patterns and habits within yourself (and others) for the sake of self-improvement and a happier life.

Tarot is a bullshit free zone, and if you’re not prepared for that, then maybe they aren’t for you.

All guidance should be taken on board even if it wasn’t the answer that you wanted. I’ve heard of so many people who simply reshuffle the cards when they don’t get the answer they want. Honestly, don’t do it. It’s not going to work. You’re going to get a similar answer with your next reading, I promise.

I remember during one particular reading, back when I first started practising tarot, the Tower card dropped out of my deck. Normally I pay attention to drop outs but this time I put it straight back in the deck and reshuffled (I obviously was not in the mood for some hard truths on that day). I cut my deck as usual and drew my daily card. Care to take a guess? Yes, The Tower card appeared before my eyes!

When a card appears to you, there is no hiding from its message. Moral of the story -  always trust your first reading!

5. Always Have Faith

Tarot not only strengthens your connection to your intuition and Higher Self. It also has the ability to strengthen your connection to the divine and powerful influences of the Universe. And the Universe always has your back.

Whatever is going on in your life, whatever struggles or lack that you are currently facing, there is always hope. No matter what your current situation, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Things may seem like the end of the world right now, but I can promise that they are not. There is power and purpose within each and every one of us and your tarot cards can often be the helping hand that leads you to it. Because, through the cards, your intuition is always guiding you in the direction of your best life. The life that you deserve to live!

Have faith in your readings because they are your divine guidance.

Have faith in the Universe because it is constantly working in your favour.

And, most importantly, have faith in yourself because you are capable of anything you put your mind to.
