A Fool Proof Plan To Accomplishing Your Goals

So we're almost a week into the new year and many of us have already decided on what we want to change and achieve this year. Unfortunately, in my experience, most New Years resolutions get thrown out the window come February because of unrealistic expectations, a lack of willpower and/or unseen circumstances out of your control.

I've never been one for sticking to plans - I tend to get distracted easily and deviate off script A LOT! I'm also a perfectionist and as soon as something goes wrong, I have a melt down and give up. This leads to me not achieving what I want to achieve and being left at square one once again. Well, no more!

I'm taking it upon myself to make 2018 the year of success and achievement in my life and I'm inviting you to join me!  At the end of last year, I put together a fool-proof plan to make sure that I'm successful in my goals this year and I wanted to share it with you all today!

1. Set Your Goals

This, obviously, is an important one. You must know what you want to do before you even think about doing it. Take some time out to focus on where you would like to be at the end of 2018. What is/are your ultimate goal(s) ?

Once you know what you're aiming for, think to yourself... is it realistic? Is it relevant to your life? Do you want it enough that you will make it a priority to stick with it?

2. Write Them Down

This, again, might seem like an obvious one, but you'd be surprised. I never use to write down my goals and would then forget aout them after a couple of weeks. When you write down your goals, you clarify and strengthen your intentions. When you see it there in writing, you will want it more!

Another tip is to write it where you're going to see it a lot. If you write it in a notebook that you barely use, it's going to forgotten. Take note of it in your phone, your diary, a vision board (I'll get to that later) or even post it notes around your house. The more you see it, the more the intention will stick in your head.

3. Plan Your Actions

Now that you know what you want, you have to put together a plan of how you will make it happen. This plan must be solid and something that you can actually manage. Don't make it too difficult or unrealistic because, changes are, you won't follow through with it.

What I like to do is think of the best way to go about achieving these goals and then break them down into small, manageable steps. This way, your plan won't be overwhelming and won't take over your life.

4. Keep Note Of Your Progress

This step is a must for me. At the end of 2017, I bought two journals and a desk planner to keep track of my progress. This may seem a bit excessive, but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.

These purchases have really been a godsend. All three are from Paperchase and if you're serious about your goals, they really will help you achieve them.

5. Be Easy On Yourself

We all know that saying, 'Rome wasn't build in a day' . You're probably not going to see results overnight or in a few weeks time for that matter. That doesn't mean you can't do it or that you should give up. When things get tough take a break and come back to it, but don't nip it in the bud.

The most satisfying thing about achieving your goals is to be able to say that you overcame every obstacle, every nagging doubt in the back of your head and every naysayer that doubted your abilities and you did it!

 6. Reward Yourself Often

I never thought about this until I received the journals and planners that I talked about above. There was an option to reward yourself once you'd completed your major goals and top priorities, and I remember thinking 'why did I not think of this before?'!

By rewarding yourself after completing one of your goal steps, you're motivating yourself to complete it and by doing this are reinforcing positive actions in yourself! You'll be one step closer to achieving your dreams and you get to treat yourself for it. It's a win-win!

7. Reflect On Your Progress

Last but not least, make some time now and again to reflect on how far you've come and how much more you have left to do. Sometimes you'll find that you were so caught up in your tasks that you didn't realise how close to the finishing line you actually were.

This step is especially important when you feel close to throwing in the towel. You may feel like you've gotten nowhere but when you actually look at your progress, it may act as motivation to carry on.
